I have a millitary macaw in a large cage inside my house and I went out of town for the weekend and when we came back there was a million of small (tick looking)flying black pests in his cage. They migrated to my pantry, we cleaned out the cage and the pantry and thought they were all gone, until last night we come home and they are in his cage again. Same food (frozen 3 days before we give it to him from the store). He doesn’t go outside.
We have a Scarlet Macaw and the only time we get those bugs is by letting his cage get too dirty! Now once you get them they move to your drains and breed! So you need to put baking soda and vinegar down all your drains including all sinks, tubs, showers, washer machine. Just pore some baking soda down the drain then add vinegar slowly it will bubble up does this several times down each drain and it should take care of your problem, without being toxic to your bird!
Hope this helps,
Tammie

We have two parakeets at home and we go to the store and buy these bug repelent things. They are round and they don’t smell all that nice, but they are harmless for the birds. I’m not sure if that is what you need to keep the insects out but it might be worth a try!

In addition to something that will kill or trap these bugs without harming your bird, I would recommend that until they go away you continue to keep your bird’s cage very clean and dry(as well as other places like a garbage disposal).
I have a hamster and these bugs can be very annoying. They like to eat their food and waste and they love to lay their eggs in the waste as well, which can make them seem like a never ending problem.

DO NOT get the Mite Protectors for your Macaw’s cage as Hillary said to do. Mite Protectors are toxic and dangerous to your bird. While it may kill mites it omits toxic fumes that can actually kill small birds and will make larger birds sick. The best thing to do is clean the cage really good. As long as the cage is kept clean there will not be any of those flies. The kind of flies that you have may not be affected by a mite protectors. The flies are attracted by the food from your bird’s cage especially fruits will attract them. The flies have a short lifespan so once they have died off and the cage is clean you wont have a problem with them. But just dont put a Mite Protector in the cage if you care about your bird.
Also DO NOT put in a fabric softner sheet in the bird’s cage, it may keep away the flies, but you dont know if it could also make the bird sick if he gets a hold of it and chews it up.
